Waxing Eloquent: Mitchell Visoky’s Encaustics

Artists’ Reception
Saturday, May 11
6 – 9pm

RiverWinds Gallery
172 Main Street, Beacon

Mitchell Visoky is a multidisciplinary visual artist. “My inspiration comes from the visceral, abstract qualities of nature and the environment. In a world that holds many contradictions, I never tire of exploring the interplay of congruent and disparate relationships within these elements.” The Artist Opening is May 11, from 6-9 pm. The show runs through June 2, 2019.

Visoky’s encaustic images are a collaboration of various media: wax, charcoal, transfers, hand-printed paper, and oil stick. “The wax medium allows me to continually rework areas by scraping, re-painting, and layering the various colors. It holds a visceral quality and provides me with an adventurous journey though the artistic process. I rely on instinct and intuition to explore qualities and relationships between lines, shapes, textures, patterns and colors. Adding collage elements, drawing, incising and incorporating various transfer processes allows me to create various layers of complexity.

“Throughout the process I remain attentive to editing, reducing and simplifying forms to their most powerful essences. In the end, each composition functions like a conversation or a musical fugue. I strive to achieve an appropriate tension and correlation between forms by balancing opposites: motion vs. stillness, depth vs. surface, concealing vs. revealing, positive vs. negative space.”

Visoky’s award-winning images have been exhibited at regional solo and group venues including the Flat Iron Gallery (Peekskill, NY), Mamaroneck Artists Guild (Larchmont, NY), Broome Street Gallery (NYC, NY), Pelham Art Center (Pelham, NY), Orazio Salati Gallery (Binghamton, NY), Rockland Center for the Arts (So. Nyack, NY), Vanderbilt Museum (Long Island, NY), Castle Gallery (New Rochelle, NY), Lazarus Gallery (New Rochelle, NY), Hammond Museum (North Salem, NY), Putnam County Arts Council (Mahopac, NY), Edward Hopper House Gallery (Nyack, NY), Salmagundi Gallery (NYC, NY), Westchester Community College (NY), Silvermine Guild Galleries (CT), Center for Contemporary Printmaking (South Norwalk, CT), Carriage Barn Arts Center (New Canaan, CT), Cartus Corporation (CT), Watchung Art Center (NJ), Truro Art Center (Truro, MA), Kobalt Gallery and A Gallery (Provincetown, MA), Muscarelle Museum of Art (VA) and the Pendle Print Biennial in Lancashire, England.

A supporter of the arts and educational outreach in his community, Visoky recently has been president of the Mamaroneck Artists Guild, Larchmont, NY and president of the New York State Art Teacher’s Association. He currently belongs to the Katonah Museum Art Association, ArtsWestchester, the Mamaroneck Artists Guild, Silvermine Art Center and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking. Working in a community of artists allows Visoky to share his ideas and gather new perspectives into his own work.

His work is in both private collections as well as Montefiore Hospital, Bronx, NY. He was an Artist in Residence in 2015 at Bullseye Glass Resource Center in Mamaroneck, NY.

Visoky holds a B.S. in Art Education from Buffalo State College and a M.S. in Studio Art from the College of New Rochelle. He resides in White Plains, NY and has a studio in Port Chester, NY.
