Second Saturday is a city-wide celebration of the arts held on the second Saturday of every month. Special events, art gallery openings, artist receptions and culinary tastings. Many galleries and shops stay open until 9pm. It’s kid friendly and a great way to take the pulse of Beacon. The Howland Public Library is pleased to present Art with Flavor, an exhibition of paintings by the Beacon Thursday Painters. An artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, August 10th, from 5-7pm. The Beacon Thursday Painters exhibit will be on display in the Community Room Exhibit Space from August 10th through September 6th.

The Beacon Thursday Painters are taking over the Howland Library’s Community Room Exhibit Space for the month of August. “Thursday Painters”, a group of seniors some experienced painters, some new to painting have been painting each week at the Beacon Recreation Center for nearly five years, guided by local artist, Jan Dolan. The theme for the show this year is favorite dishes. Each artist has painted their favorite food and has even included the recipe with the art work. Some of the dishes will even be available to try at the reception. This opening will truly be a feast for all of the senses.

Main Gallery: Faith Adams | SWARM
Ceramics artist and returning BAU member, Faith Adams will be showing a series of 50+ wheel thrown porcelain plates and several tea sets. Her new work features a collection of screen printed and hand detailed insects; some admired and beloved, some feared and reviled. All have been imperiled by us. The insects featured are native or present in North America and most are deemed threatened or endangered.

Hudson Beach Glass is pleased to present “Lost and Found”. The exhibition features drawings, paintings, and collages by Deborah Davidovits and Andrea Moreau. Both artists work with existing printed material and either add to and or remove parts of it to expose the inner and outer worlds of possibility. This creates a dialogue between what existed and what is created. These imaginary expressions open up a whole new vision of what can be seen. Ongoing through September 8.

RiverWinds Gallery at 172 Main Street, Beacon, NY is presenting “Romantic Hudson Valley: Steve Duffy: New Work.” He has created paintings throughout his career and devoted himself to landscapes of the Hudson Valley for the last four years. Steve Duffy is a graduate of Pratt Institute where he studied Industrial Design. He has designed retail interiors, museum concepts and exhibits and has had his own namesake firm located both in New York City and Nashville TN. Ongoin through September 8, 2019.

After a sold out run of last summer’s #QueenE, HUDSON VALLEY THEATRE INITIATIVE is thrilled to announce their second annual summer community musical, The original musical: Brave Tailor Maid. Two additional performances will be held at the James Earl Jones Theater at Poughkeepsie Day School (260 Boardman Rd, Poughkeepsie NY 12603) on August 16th and 17th, 2019 both at 7pm. This show has been created for an adult theatre audience, but children 7 and up are also encouraged to attend.

Get On Down at the Elks Lounge Dance Night located at 900 Wolcott Avenue (Route 9D), in Beacon. A vibrant mix of R&B, Latin, Soul, Funk, Reggae, Rock, Disco, Blues & more is played by DJs Rhoda and Al. New song selections are added for each monthly dance, always aiming for the music to be moving, exciting and beautiful. Song requests welcome.

The lounge area is roomy, the sound is superb, lighting is low and the ambiance is warm and intimate. These dances are informal and even if you come alone, you can always find a friendly partner on the dance floor. Attire is whatever suits your mood – from blue jeans to dazzling sparkles. All are welcome: Singles, Couples, Friends, Strangers.

Join practicing artists for a free monthly workshop of art making and play at Dia:Beacon. Designed for all ages, Saturday Studio is a family friendly program that is most suitable for children ages 5 and up. All families participating in the Saturday Studio program receive free admission to Dia:Beacon for the day. Reservations are recommended and can be made one week in advance of the event or the day of at 10:00am. Please go to diaart.org/program/program/saturday-studio.
