BEAHIVE 1What is the nature of your business?
Inspired in part by the coworking and Localism movements, BEAHIVE is a new kind of collaborative space for work and community, the only of its kind in the Hudson Valley. We currently have three hives: Beacon, Kingston, and Albany. At the most basic level, we provide a shared, creative work environment for entrepreneurs, the creative class, microbusinesses and consultants.

When did you launch your business?
May 2009

Did you start in Beacon?
Yes

If yes, why did you decide to start your business here?
I live here. And it just so happens that I live here for all the right reasons that BEAHIVE can thrive.

Is there one thing about your business that you would really like folks to know?
Most people know of us as a workspace, with occasional events. But we’re more than desks and wifi and printers. We’re a community of members from diverse backgrounds with a range of talents and a desire to improve our professional and personal lives and our community. Ultimately we’re supporting a Local Living Economy (aka Localism), one that is vibrant, sustainable, locally rooted and human-scale.

BEAHIVE 2When did you become a member of BeaconArts and why?
Member since 2009. BeaconArts promotes a local arts and culture economy and community in the way that BEAHIVE promotes all aspects of a local economy and community.

Where are you from originally?
A small, backwards town in rural Missouri. After living in Chicago, Philly, New Jersey, the city, Paris, and then the city again, I moved to Beacon in 2006.

What is your favorite book?
Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon

BEAHIVE 3Do you have a favorite place, event or thing to do in Beacon?
Hike the mountain. Hang at Ella’s or the Bank Sq terrace. Stroll along the river. And of course, 2nd Saturdays.

Do you think Beacon is different from other Hudson Valley cities?
We have the river *and* a mountain. We have Dia *and* little galleries. We have the train *and* a ferry. And we have one, really long Main St that is the literal and figurative spine of the city.

Using your imagination, describe Beacon five years from now.
There will be a massive water slide from the top of Mt Beacon winding its way through the town to the river. It’ll be awesome!
