BACA General Meeting Minutes:   
May 27, 2009

The beginning of the meeting was a tour of Winston Roeth's studio - amazing work.

Jinni James was elected as the new BACA Secretary.

Dan Rigley on PR update: Reminder to all members or artists, please get info in to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it The earlier the better for email submissions. Jpeg images are preferred. Map will be updated in July. Deadline is June 29.

Jane: Big Bambu, the Starn Studio located at Tallix Building, will host next general meeting on June24 at 6:30.

Hat Parade is one week away.  Madam Bret giving tours of 7 generation of hats. Hat making workshop being held at BumbleBEE Art & Music, 10:30 June 6.

Ty Marshal, on the August windows on main. Discussed sponsor and logos. Cut off date is June 16th.  20 Artists will be pared with local businesses. Further discussion on local artists and examples of some of the window art to come. Focus at this point is now being directed towards sponsorship. This year window's on main did not receive grants, due to lack of time. There will be a panel discussion on August 8th; discussing artists work, community, and the economy.  Dan Rigley is participating in Windows on Main, and is putting out a request for up  to three projectors.

Linda and Jim Korn on the September 6/7 Open Studios: Info on blog, beaconopenstudios.blogspot.com. Registration party set for Fri June 26th or 27th. This is a beacon wide project. Vision is to have as many artists as possible to participate.  Teresa really wants to develop this as a great showcase for local artists, but also a great showcase of BACA.

Linda , sets motion to approve April General Meeting Minutes,

Linda: lets get the word and stories out about, giving a donation to Rick's mural on West Main. Also suggesting donations for July Fireworks. Pledges for, fireworks to be in by the end May. Group discussion on amount of donation BACA is to give.

QUAD Activites: Dennis White to handle all QUAD events. Railroad station booth by ferry, so the weekend of June 7th. to house all the local information and goings on of Newburgh and Beacon.

Steve Gold, Beacon, Mayor: Even in this economy, Beacon is still doing well because of all the local things being planned by the BACA and BBA.

Linda: opening May 28th of the Art Along the Hudson. This year, we are distributing the flyers on the NY thruway. Beacon has three artists participating in the Art Show for Art Along the Hudson. 100 miles of art, is the new tag line. BACA helping establish other cities such as 3rd Saturdays in New Paltz.

6:45 Fovea Exhibitions:  The April 2009 BACA General Membership meeting was ld at Fovea (www.foveaexhibitions.org) located at 143 Main Street, Beacon, NY.  The eeting was hosted by Fovea Board of Directors, Sabine Meyer and Stephanie Heimann ho talked about the current exhibition of veteran Time Magazine photojournalist nthony Suau and also gave us the grand tour of their new darkroom!

In addition, Kelly Kingman the creator of Beacon's own hometown social networking ol Beacon Citizens Network (BCN) (http://www.beaconcitizen.com) spoke. She talked out the network, her vision for setting it up and how Beacon's artists and businesses n use it to their best advantage.

General Meeting Minutes
Hudson Beach Glass
March 25, 2009 6:30PM

Members Present:  Linda Hubbard, Carl Van Brunt, Doug Berlin, Jennifer Mackiewicz, Michael Benzer, Penny Hahn, Dan Rigney, Jane Waldrop, Kat Stoutenborough, Steven Evans, Margaret McDuffie, Ty Marshall, etc

Call to Order: 6:45  Linda opens meeting and welcomed members. Introductions of members were made.  Linda introduces Michael, one-quarter owner of Hudson Beach Glass.  Michael gives history and tour of Hudson Beach Glass, discusses future plans and gives a glass demonstration. Michael entertained questions from the members.

Business Meeting: 7:30   Minutes of last general meeting were distributed for review. Carl moved to approve minutes; Jane seconds motion; all in favor to approve.

Finance   Doug presented and discussed 2009 Budget (attached) with the following notes: actual expenditures are less than budgeted due to legal training for board that was never pursued.  Accounting fees: for bookkeeper that will be hired; Insurance: Directors and Officers, and General Liability;  Printing: heavy due to map;  Linda talked about discontinuing telephone service. Carl reminded members that website advertising space is available and generates income.  Penny explains the need for approval of resolution in accordance with our by-laws of approval of temporary budget. Carl moves that resolution be accepted as written, Steven seconds, all in favor.  As a result, the temporary budget was approved and a new one will be voted upon at the April Meeting.
   
BACA News
- Membership:  Kat shows membership package for businesses and distributes several. Artist members will get similar package. Kat and Linda explained specific back logs and how renewals will work.
- PR Update:   Linda said that Dan and James have updated kiosks and new map has been organized. Kat has been doing phenomenal job on getting out BACA newsletter. Kat discussed how numbers are being tracked on newsletter. She urged members to send information to her to get pictures etc. on newsletter. Submission instructions are on website.

- Future Programs and Meeting Locations:  Jane asked if we could flip meetings to be able to visit Winston's studio. Jane welcomed artists to contact her regarding meeting studio visits.
        
Beacon News
- Mayor Initiative:   Arts and Cultural Committee.  Linda announced that city has kicked off rhe Arts and Cultural Committee: Penny and Dan have been nominated to represent BACA. John Gilvey and Stephanie Heiman are also volunteer representatives.
- Proposed City Ordinance:  Ty has composed a city public art ordinance. Ordinance would take control of zoning and planning committees from saying whether art is acceptable and legal but would instead adhere to ordinance. Ty has presented this as an item for public comments. Linda encourages everyone to take a look at this and to add comments and suggestions.
- Linda said that Randall's way finding signs are going up around Beacon.

Hudson Valley News

- Art Along the Hudson:   Linda gave an update. This year Peekskill and New Paltz are joining; Rhinebeck and Hudson are not renewing. Linda said now is the time for businesses to join to get on map for Art Along the Hudson. Linda showed Hudson Valley Business publication that AAH is working with. HVB is doing a piece on 2nd Saturday. Kickoff event is being planned at Cuneen Hackett; details to follow.
- Dutchess County Tourism Guide:  Carl delivered update. Carl thanked Margaret for getting members to sign up for the ad. Robert Rodriguez donated the photograph. We have 14 sponsors, reason for change to generic photo. This also goes onto website.
- Walkway Art Opportunity:  Linda encouraged artists to sign up for this opportunity, explained on the website.

Other - New Business Discussion
Michael opened discussion regarding the New York Times article on Beacon.
Doug talked about BEEP - Beacon East End Presents. Open Space wants to start monthly music event for east end starting on April 8 with live music at Piggy Bank. Jane talked about clothes swap event happening 4 times a year.

Open Session
Linda Hubbard called meeting to order at 7:49 p.m.  Thanks were given to Bo Gehring for the tour of his incredible work.

Approval of Minutes
o    Motion to approve minutes from January 27, 2009 meeting; Carl Van Brunt moved, Margaret McDuffie 2nd, all in favor
o    BACA is dedicated to keeping minutes this year and will be positing them on their website.

Approval of Finance Report
o    1/08-2/09
-    $9000 in grants and contributions
-    $13, 000 in membership
-    $18,000 in expenses
o    Approximately $5600 currently in bank
o    At the next meeting a budget will be presented that is being developed by the Board.

Committees
o    A list of the extensive committees was given out.
o    Linda requested that people join these committees
o    Simon Draper is chairing the Artists Committees; Michael Benzer is chairing the Membership Committee; Dan Rigney is chairing the Publicity Committee; Jane Waldrop is chairing the Programs Committee; we need someone to chair the Fundraising Committee.

BACA Events
o    The Hat Parade is 6/6/09 at 2:30. Jacqueline will be chairing-there will be no music festival this year. Volunteers are needed.
o    Quadracentennial-6/7/09 the flotilla is coming up the river and will be on the Beacon/Newburgh waterfront. BACA is working with Newburgh on a joint project to celebrate the Quad. There is a proposal for an Art Out to be held 6/6/09-6/10/09 and on 6/20/09 a silent auction. 
o    BACA will be having an event to highlight the achievements of Fed Danback and are working to solidify a date for that event-Jane Waldrop is organizing.

Guidelines for BACA website
o    Instructions were given out with submission guidelines developed by Linda Hubbard, Robert Rodriguez and James Korn.
o    These guidelines will be posted on the website.
o    A reminder was noted that everyone should link there websites to the BACA website.
o    Any events and submissions will be included in the weekly emails as well as on the website, images are encouraged.

BACA Map
o    The BACA map is being updated.
o    The new Japanese restaurant has joined. Chill has joined.
o    Any changes need to be in by Friday February 27, 2009 for the March maps.

Beacon News
o    CNN is going to be shooting a segment for their travel show in Beacon on Friday February 27, 209; they will be filming at Homespun, Hudson Beach Glass and Riverwinds Gallery; they selected the places through the BACA website; BACA will try to post the segment on the website.
o    A park is being developed in the grass area between Riverwinds Gallery and Hudson Beach Glass; the grant is to make a children’s park, Linda is speaking with Maureen Lashley about possibly developing a children’s art sculpture park.
o    Mayor is developing an Arts and Cultural Committee for the City of Beacon. It will be a 5-15 person committee which will be an arts focus with city hall and the mayor’s office.
o    Proposed City Ordinance is being developed for Art in Public Places by Ty Marshall.
o    A Woody Guthrie fundraising event is being held on February 28, 2009.
o    GSDCC 2009 Shaker Awards is being held on March 9, 2009 at the Civic Center. Dan Weise, of OPEN SPACE, is being honored.
o    Mill Street Loft Event is being held on March 5, 2009-dontaions requested for the silent auction; photographs by Robert Rodriguez will be featured during the program.
o    Art Along the Hudson-Beacon will participate again. Peekskill and New Paltz may be joining as well; Motion that Beacon participate and allocate $875 from their fund to be matched by $875 from city funds; Carl Van Brunt moved, Dan Rigney 2nd, all in favor, motion passed.
o    Dutchess County Tourism Guide opportunity-need 14 sponsors at $100 each, quarter page ad for BACA, March 20, 2009 deadline, also a special webpage will be created that will feature the ad sponsors.
o    Theresa Goodby, an artist in Beacon, spoke to the group about developing an open studio in Beacon. She is going to work with the Artists Committee on planning this event
o    BACA is now on Facebook.
