They’ll make history while chronicling the Erie Canal, then paddle south on the Hudson River. The month-long expedition highlights the heritage, culture, wildlife, landmarks, and activities along the route. Harpham and Charles paddle the route in double seated kayaks, inviting people to join them along the way. The project is being photographed and filmed.

Welcome them to Dutchess at stops in Poughkeepsie and Beacon on May 17 & 18th. Hear them speak at Beacon Sloop Club’s clubhouse on Thursday, May 18th at 8:30pm, and be on hand to tell them all about the Hudson River!

Greetings Fellow Artists:

It is time again for the next edition of what was formally known as the Beacon Arts Magazine and now known as The Beacon SCENE to hit the stands. We changed the name so we would be not confused with our friends at BACA and because we are getting larger and more diverse with articles on a whole range of subjects related to the greater Beacon area. That’s why The Beacon SCENE is all about Stage, Cuisine, Exhibits, Nature, and Entertainment – the perfect fit for a diverse area! With a new look and cover to match the branding we are doing at The Beacon, it seemed the perfect time to change the name.

But, some things don’t change and we now need from the community the art and culture events that will be happening between June and September of 2012 that you are aware of.

BACA was nice enough to send this out because even though we receive submissions from Dia, BACA, the Chamber, and the Howland, we know we are missing important contributions at other venues.

So following the short 3-4 line blurb format that you see in the present BAM, please give us the what, when, where, price, and contact info on how to buy tickets if there are any. We will fit for space and, of course, there is no charge. Please send the information (and your contact info in case we have a question) to thescene@thebeacontheatre.org

4000 copies will be distributed in the greater Beacon area, including Cold Spring/Garrison and the Newburgh waterfront.

Also, this edition has an advertising offer to galleries and individual artists for a color strip ad to promote your gallery for only $75.
If you are interested just write us at the address above and Jim Brady will come visit you. Larger ads are still available as well.

Thanks and have a safe and profitable summer!

On Saturday, June 2nd, Dance Beacon/Ballet Arts Studio, together with The Dutchess Dance Company, will present Vivaldi’s Suites of the Seasons at the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie, NY. The show will feature many local young dancers from Beacon and surrounding towns in Dutchess, Putnam and Orange Counties.

Vivaldi’s Suites of the Seasons will showcase the talents of Dance Beacon/Ballet Arts Studio students, aged three through 18, in choreography to The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, as well as other baroque composers. The energetic and eclectic program will highlight the classical and conservatory-level training offered at the studio and will include a selection of modern, African and jazz pieces. The program will also include the studio’s pre-professional dance company, The Dutchess Dance Company, in premieres of modern and contemporary ballet pieces by Artistic Director Alex Bloomstein and studio Ballet Mistress Denyse Looney. Additionally, the Concert will premiere a classical ballet piece created exclusively for the Company by Resident Choreographer Todd Hall.

The Dutchess Dance Company (DDC) is designed to generate professional-level training and performance opportunities for talented, young dancers age twelve and up. DDC performs at community events and venues throughout the region, including recent appearances at DanceFest in New Paltz and a benefit concert for the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck.

Dance Beacon/Ballet Arts Studio is a conservatory-level dance school located in the heart of Beacon, New York. For more than forty years, Dance Beacon and Ballet Arts Studio have offered students ages three through adult classes in all levels of ballet, modern, African, and jazz dance, taught by experienced instructors who have all worked as professional dancers.

In fact, let’s take the word landscape out of the quotient and instead replace it with the concept of light and space.

The artist’s chief concern is capturing the subtleties of atmospheric perspective, revealing a landscape transformed by weather and the changing light of early morning or dusk. Though his paintings ignore overt signs of human presence and often depict stormy, restless skies his work is not simply Romantic and is distinguished by a distinctly contemporary mood.

“I never want to paint a static landscape where everything seems

at rest,” he says, “I always push for the work to feel as if it’s suspended or tensed against itself-just caught in the midst of movement.”

These paintings come out of a process that mimics nature: A pool of paint hardens like ice or mud, it is subject to temperature and humidity, and it’s thickness and viscosity impact how the surface dries. The drawing in the paintings – the cracks, coagulations and streaks of unmixed pigment – is the result of a delicate and flexible relationship between control and accident. A landscape lives inside of us. An internal space. A rich accumulation of places, experiences – a visual emotional memory bank of time in space and space in time. The “Aequora Poured” series draws on this internal space.

After studying the forms of Kanji and Ancient Vietnamese calligraphy, she decided that it was impossible to attempt to copy the calligraphy herself. But what she could do was to look at the form and rhythm of the symbols for peace, love, friendship, home, destiny etc. and pay homage to that beauty in her instinctual mark making while retaining the vibrant colors which have been her hallmark.

YOU CAN HELP!

You are invited

A meeting of the Main Street/Waterfront Linkage Committee

Open to the Public

Wednesday at 7PM, May 16, 2012

Memorial Building

413 Main Street

The City of Beacon is taking a fresh look at its zoning. The City would like to invite all Beacon citizens to a meeting to discuss possible changes to the zoning codes.

Zoning determines what the City looks like and how it works. Simpler and clearer zoning regulations will help to preserve the character of Beacon as the city continues to grow. The zoning code, which shapes how our city will develop, has become a complex patchwork of outdated regulations that can frustrate the City’s attempts at revitalization. The City has formed a committee to study the zoning in two primary areas: From Route 9D down to the waterfront and mid-Main Street, from Digger Phelps to Teller.

A volunteer committee is working with a professional zoning specialist to prepare initial recommendations for changes to the zoning. Many of the suggestions are based on guidance from the City’s Comprehensive Plan, a planning document created with community input, adopted by the City Council. Please see Beacon City Website: http://cityofbeacon.org/files/comprehensiplanadopted-2007dec.pdf

What sort of zoning changes might be made?

The Comprehensive Plan recommends encouraging more people to live and work in the Main Street area in order to create a more vibrant and attractive streetscape and a healthier local economy.

The Comprehensive Plan suggests that the City can achieve these goals by allowing building heights of up to four stories, easing parking requirements, and making development of empty parcels more attractive to developers.

Other possible changes would help further define our City–what it will look like, how we use it, and how others see it.

Let’s get together to discuss the future of Beacon. Get in on the action!
