Celebrate Beacon’s 100th year by participating in Windows on Main Street! Deadline extended to May 14

Did you know that the City of Beacon is named in honor of the historic beacon fires that were lit atop the mountain to alert the Continental Army of British troop movements during the Revolutionary War? Or that the Mount Beacon Incline Railway was one of the steepest in existence during its years of operation? From its history as “The Hat Making Capital of the U.S.”, to the thriving artistic hub it is today, Beacon has been a creative and unique city.

In celebration of the Beacon Centennial, all projects in this year’s Windows on Main Street will incorporate some aspect of the “Past, Present, and Future” of Beacon. Recent years have fostered a successful and growing artistic community in Beacon —it’s time to reflect on the great history of our city!

Windows on Main Street gives Beacon artists a unique, public platform to display site-specific work that showcases their talent and dedication. It is a celebration of Beacon’s uniqueness, rich history and recent revitalization. This collaborative and multidisciplinary project is intended to stimulate interaction between artists, residents, and commercial vendors to explore how art can provide cultural and social understanding and be a catalyst for economic improvement in communities. It provides local artists with the exciting challenge of creating something site-specific inspired by the place it is displayed and the city.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Artists submit an application outlining their proposed installation. Proposals should be relevant to their host-store and reflect an aspect of Centennial theme, “Beacon: Past, Present, Future.” Applications are due by May 7, 2013 without exception.
  2. Submissions are reviewed by the Windows on Main Street organizing committee. Artists may be asked to provide additional information about their project after their initial submission to aid in appropriate placement. Windows on Main Street is about creating site-specific works drawing inspiration from their storefronts and the unique history and character of Beacon. While we will do our best to accommodate store requests, placement will be determined by site specificity, connection or relevance to a place, inclusion of the Beacon Centennial theme, as well as necessary physical accommodations.Beacon100_Logo_RGB
  3. Artists will then be contacted with their assigned store-front. Business owners will be contacted with the name and contact information of their artist. At this point, it’s up to the artist to contact the business owner to discuss the work and coordinate installation. Windows on Main Street requires communication between artists and their assigned store. This is an exciting project for everyone, and keeping your store-owner in the loop will ensure the best outcome.
  4. An Artist/Store Agreement must be signed prior to installation and returned to the organizing committee. The Agreement can be downloaded from our website www.beaconwindows.org.
  5. Install your work! Be sure to coordinate with the business owner for the best time to do this.

Here’s the timeline:

  • March 15: Submissions Open. The form can be filled out from here: http://www.beaconwindows.org/p/2013-application.html
  • May 14: Submissions Close. Submissions will be accepted until May 14. We will not be confirming pairing before this date.
  • June 7: Artist/Store Confirmation. You will receive an email confirming your store choice.
  • June 30: Artist Statements Due. These should be specific to your project and will be displayed alongside your installation, published in the catalog and used for promotion. It is imperative that they are in on time.
  • August 5: Artist/Store Agreements Due. You will not be able to install without returning this.
  • August 5-9: Installation. Please smartly coordinate this with your store-front owner.
  • August 10: Opening Party! Our opening bash will be at Dream in Plastic (177 Main St.).  It’s a great day to come out, walk the length of Main St and marvel at the transformation.
