Howland Public Library: “Dig into Reading” Summer Program

dig-into-readingChildren of all abilities, ages 3-12, are encouraged to join the Howland Public Library’s 2013 Summer Reading Program, “Dig into Reading”.  Libraries instill a love of reading in children and help them to maintain their reading skills so that they return to school ready for the new school year. All the fun begins the week of July 8th at the library located on 313 Main St. in Beacon.  Children will keep reading logs at the library or online so that they can log minutes that they’ve read or have been read to. Parents may register online, by clicking on the “Summer Reading” link on the library’s Website, http://beaconlibrary.org, and begin logging minutes read each day beginning June 15th  (you may register up until Aug.1st).

Below is a listing of the summer programs planned around the theme.”Dig into Reading.”

Dig Into Reading Thursdays for children entering grades 1-6 begins on July 11th. Every Thursday at 1pm through Aug. 15th, performer/educators will dig up lots learning fun…from insects to rocks & minerals to animals that dig.  We will kick off with The Traveling Lantern Theatre and end off with the Dirtmeister!  A schedule of events is available in the library or on Howland Library’s online calendar. No registration necessary.

The Read-to-Me Club for children ages 3-6 will meet on Friday mornings between 10:45 – 11:45am from July 5th – Aug. 16th.  We’ll dig our way through stories, songs, and fun crafts.  No registration necessary.

Book/Craft Club with Miss Shirley begins July 9th for children entering grades 4-6 in September.  Students will meet Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1-3:00pm through Aug. 14th to share a craft project, educational games, and discussions about the book that they read together. This program is designed for students who are reading on grade level or above, and would like to keep up with their reading skills during the summer. Right in line with the new Common Core Standards for Curriculum, children will discover the fun of non-fiction with a flare!  This club is limited to 20 children so parents/guardians must register beginning June 11th by contacting Ginny Figlia, Head of Youth Services, at 831-1134, x.103 or youth@beaconlibrary.org.

Remember, all children who log their time read will have their names sent to their schools for special recognition in September. For a listing of all event information and dates, just click on Howland Public Library’s online calendar at http://beaconlibrary.org.  You may also contact Ginny Figlia, Head of Youth Services, at youth@beaconlibrary.org or 845-831-1134, x.103. Beacon Music Factory: INNOVATIVE & AFFORDABLE MUSIC SCHOOL ANNOUNCES EXPANDED SCHEDULE OF CLASSES, A COMMUNITY CHOIR, A SCHOLARSHIP FUND

CLASSES & LESSONS FOR EVERY AGE GROUP & SKILL LEVEL

Beacon Music Factory

Beacon Music Factory

Whether you are looking for fun and age-relevant music classes and  lessons for your kids, or you are of a certain age and still dreaming of playing in a band, the Beacon Music Factory is here for you. We have as many adult students as kids!
Beacon Music Factory opened its doors in January this year, and the place has been buzzing ever since. With its quarters in the lower level of the First Presbyterian Church at 50 Liberty Street, Beacon, the Beacon Music Factory’s instructors are a group of professional musician/teachers who came together to start a school with innovative and affordable classes for every age group. These teachers, who are all professional musicians, represent a wealth of musical experience. Between them, they have produced and played on hit records, performed in symphonies, and in clubs and arenas, and led workshops and panels at festivals. For them, this school represents their desire to share what they know. All of our teachers also agree there is always more to be learned.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Since we opened we’ve met many kids in our neighborhood who are very curious about the school, who would also like to participate, but do not have the means. Clearly there is a need today for music education for all. We hear it all the time from parents who tell us,“yes, my son took violin at school the one year it was offered.” Music education is shrinking in the public schools. We are proud to establish a need-based scholarship fund at BMF. The Dutchess County Arts Council is the fiscal sponsor of the fund. Our goal this year is to raise $2,500, and distribute ten $250 scholarships. The school has been continually growing throughout this first year and we could not be more thrilled to now be offering such a tremendous range of classes starting in September.

ROCK BAND BOOT CAMP (AGES 12-16) puts you in a band and you begin playing on the very first day. It doesn’t matter how much or how little experience you have. You’ll gain years of experience in a few short weeks.

The ADULTS section of Rock Band Boot Camp goes conceptual this fall with ZIGGY STARDUST ROCK BAND BOOT CAMP. This class is going to learn to play David Bowie’s entire Ziggy Stardust album from start to finish, and then they are going to perform it (probably more than once). No musical experience required.

GROUP VIOLIN introduces young students (Ages 4-12) to the fundamentals of violin playing: posture, holding the violin and bow, basic technique, scales and tone production. Absolute beginners will be able to play at least one tune by the session’s end.

GROUP GUITAR FOR THE PEOPLE, with separate sections for ADULTS and TEENS. Learn guitar and by the end of the class you’ll have a heap of songs you can play around the campfire or at the next open mic.<br?
GROUP CHAMBER MUSIC FOR STRINGS — ADULTS

GROUP BARITONE UKULELE (KIDS 6-9)

THE MUSIC FACTORY COMMUNITY CHOIR
Today, music goes generally unchallenged as a commercial enterprise where a chosen few perform for the many. The shared promise of music for all is largely forgotten. But it is never too late to exercise your right to sing! It feels good, and it feels even better to sing with others. Strengthen yourself, your
community, and make your world a better place. The Music Factory Choir is a non-auditioned choir in your community where all are welcome. This choir will support and join in powerful community-based activities, with regular performances throughout the year.

FUZZMANIA: Build Your Own ‘Fuzz’ Guitar Effect Pedal. In this ONE-DAY WORKSHOP (Age 15 to Adult) you will build your very own replica of the legendary Dallas-Arbiter FuzzFace. We’ll build the circuit board, mount the controls, and assemble. You’ll go home with your very own working Fuzz!

SONGWRITING WORKSHOP Songs! There are so many kinds of songs. Songs about love, songs about loss, songs about lobsters, elevators, bananas, and pick-up trucks. What comes first? The words? The title? The melody?
